
Charleston Police Announce Arrest in Downtown Homicide Investigation
Charleston, S.C. - The Charleston Police Department announced an arrest in a shooting that left 32-year-old Akeem Jones dead on the 100 block of Stuart Street in downtown Charleston on August 6, 2023.
Jaques Demetrius Jenkins-Smith, 29, of North Charleston, was apprehended today, August 11, by the US Marshals Service. He faces charges of Murder and Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime.
Jenkins-Smith is in custody at the Al Cannon Detention Center and is scheduled for a bond hearing tomorrow, August 12, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.
On the morning of August 6, 2023, CPD officers responded to reports of an injured male near Johnson and America Streets in downtown Charleston around 10:58 am. Officers arrived within minutes and located a male suffering from gunshot wounds. CPD officers rendered aid to the victim until the Charleston Fire Department and EMS arrived. EMS transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Charleston Police detectives diligently pursued the investigation, leading to the identification and subsequent arrest of Jaques Demetrius Jenkins-Smith as the shooting suspect.
