The Charleston Police Department is aware of the planned demonstrations scheduled to take place this weekend within the city. These events are currently permitted for their respective locations. While we do not anticipate disruption, we are mindful that recent events in other cities have demonstrated how peaceful demonstrations can be affected by outside actors or unexpected disruptions. With that in mind, we are taking a proactive and coordinated approach to our response.
We fully support the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and free expression. Our responsibility is to safeguard the wellbeing of everyone in our community including residents, businesses, visitors, and those participating in lawful demonstrations. To that end, CPD has maintained open and consistent communication with event organizers, who have expressed their shared commitment to peaceful advocacy and have cooperated fully with our team. This ongoing dialogue has strengthened our ability to anticipate needs, prevent miscommunication, and address concerns before they escalate.
Our operational strategy includes reinforced staffing and real-time coordination with regional and state partners. These resources will be positioned to maintain public order and to respond promptly and appropriately if conditions change. Our team is fully prepared to act should the situation shift.
“We remain focused on managing these events with professionalism and diligence,” said Chief Chito Walker. “Should any behavior fall outside the bounds of lawful protest, whether by participants or external individuals, we are equipped and prepared to respond swiftly and decisively.”
“The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority, and we are committed to ensuring that demonstrations remain peaceful and lawful,” said Mayor William Cogswell. “We will enforce the rules necessary to protect both public safety and the rights of all involved.”
CPD will continue to monitor developments throughout the weekend.
