The Charleston CPAC (Citizen Police Advisory Council) Presents: Charleston Police Motor Vehicle Stops – What You Should Know
Charleston, S.C. - The Citizen Police Advisory Council (CPAC), in partnership with the Charleston Police Department, presents the next topical discussion to offer informational resources to the public. The latest topic is an overview of the CPD's motor vehicle stop procedures and what you should know.
Motor vehicle stops are an essential tool for law enforcement and, when used correctly, can positively address problems in a community and build trust. The CPD has made changes to its related policies to ensure constitutional policing, enhance public safety, and address the findings of its voluntary Racial Bias Audit.
Motor vehicle stops set the stage for a large proportion of police-citizen interactions. The Bureau of Justice Statistics shows that these events constituted the majority of the most recent police-initiated contacts reported by a national sample of survey takers in 2020 (Tapp & Davis, 2022). In 2022, the CPD performed 13,197 motor vehicle stops.
The discussion will include a review of the continuous training and reinforcement of motor vehicle stop procedures, what to expect during a motor vehicle stop, and steps the public can take to ensure a motor vehicle stop is as safe as possible. This informative session is being conducted in a webinar format and scheduled for February 9, 2023, at 7 p.m. Captain Jason Bruder (CPD Patrol Division), Emily Broome (CPAC Councilperson), and Paul Tamburrino (CPAC Communications Subcommittee Chair) will facilitate and lead this public informational session.
