[ARCHIVED] Wanted Subject Arrested; Dog Fatally Shot After Charging Officer

Charleston, SC – Just before 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Charleston Police officers were near Radcliffe Place Drive and Bees Ferry Road to serve an active arrest warrant for shoplifting on Tobin James Pettiet (51, of Charleston).

As officers approached the area where Pettiet was located, a large, unleashed mixed-breed dog suddenly and aggressively charged at them from a nearby tent. One officer attempted to back away, but the dog continued to lunge. In response to the immediate threat, the officer discharged their service weapon. The dog, which belonged to Pettiet, was shot and died at the scene.

Pettiet was arrested and taken into custody. Charleston Police Animal Control officers responded to the scene and transported the dog to a nearby veterinary hospital for appropriate, humane aftercare.

Chief Chito Walker said, “No one wants to see an animal harmed, especially our officers. When there is a sudden and immediate threat, they are trained to act quickly to protect themselves and others. These decisions happen in seconds, and they are never taken lightly. We know how much people love their pets, and we share that same compassion, too. While responsible pet care can help avoid these dangerous situations, that does not make this any easier.”

This incident remains under investigation.
