The Community Outreach Division of the Charleston Police Department is dedicated to strengthening the bond between the police and the community through educational initiatives, public awareness campaigns, and active engagement. The division’s mission is to build trust, safety, and collaboration across all neighborhoods in Charleston. The team is organized into various squads, including specialized units like the Housing Unit and Bridgeview Unit, which focus on addressing unique community challenges. Additionally, the Co-Responder Team, a partnership with the Department of Mental Health, pairs a licensed clinician with a police officer to respond to mental health crises, ensuring individuals receive proper care and resources. The division also includes a Hispanic Outreach Coordinator and a Youth Outreach Coordinator, who focus on building strong relationships with the Hispanic community and developing programs for youth engagement.
