The city of Charleston’s annual “Operation Move-out” initiative begins next week. Operation Move-out will be conducted from 8 a.m., Monday, July 30th through 5 p.m., Friday, August 3rd. Tenants are asked to place trash items at the curb by 7 a.m. during this period for pickup that day.

Operation Move-out began a number of years ago in response to the build-up of discarded household goods on the city sidewalks and streets as renters and college students move out of their rental properties downtown.

The initiative is organized by the city’s Department of Livability and Tourism to better manage the removal of trash from the public right of way.

Livability Division code enforcement officers will conduct patrols in the area of the peninsula most affected by the end of July move-out—between Line Street and Beaufain Street—to identify locations where trash is being put out improperly. These code enforcement officers will provide an informational flyer to tenants describing proper methods for discarding household items. The flyer will also inform tenants of alternative methods of discarding their household items, e.g., by donating gently used items to charities such as Good Will Industries.

Dan Riccio, the director of the city of Charleston Department of Livability and Tourism said, “Our goal with Operation Move-out is to help keep the sidewalks and streets clear of debris by informing landlords and tenants of the proper way to dispose of their trash while facilitating the timely removal of the unwanted items.”
