[ARCHIVED] City of Charleston July 20 PM Flooding Update

Due to today’s extreme rainfall event, city of Charleston crews and emergency officials have been working since early this morning to mitigate the effects of flooding throughout the city. Unofficial reports indicate that parts of the Charleston peninsula received up to 10 inches of rainfall in the past 24 hours, with nearly 8 inches falling on Daniel Island.

With the potential for heavy rain continuing into the evening, and in order to keep as much traffic off the roads during rush hour as possible, city of Charleston released non-essential personnel earlier this afternoon.

The Septima Clark Parkway reopened to northbound and southbound traffic earlier today after being cleared of standing water and flooded vehicles.

City crews remain ready to respond to any further events associated with this weather system overnight, with additional personnel scheduled for the morning and throughout the weekend.

Commercial garbage and trash collection that could not be completed due to this morning’s flooding in the Central Business District is expected to resume tomorrow.

The city continues to ask any residents who have experienced structural flooding in their homes or businesses to call the city of Charleston information line during business hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 843-724-7311. As always, emergency calls should be directed to 911.
