[ARCHIVED] City of Charleston Offers Affordable Housing Through First Time Homeownership Initiative

The city of Charleston department of Housing and Community Development recently constructed two homes, located at 1904 Doscher Avenue and 56 Nunan Street, that are now available for purchase through their First Time Homeownership Initiative.

The Homeownership Initiative, developed in 2000, is designed to provide affordable homeownership opportunities for low- and moderate-income families, while stimulating revitalization and preserving both the affordability of housing and the character of diverse neighborhoods on the peninsula. A combination of newly constructed and rehabilitated homes are made available through this program, each developed and sold to first-time homebuyers with households earning 50-120 percent of the area median income.

These most recent HI properties were constructed with funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME), which provides formula grants to state and local governments for the purpose of creating affordable housing.

Geona Shaw Johnson, city of Charleston director of housing and community development, said, “These recently constructed homes illustrate the city’s ongoing dedication to making housing more affordable and accessible to residents, and how our Homeownership Initiative is helping us reach that goal.”

The Doscher Avenue and Nunan Street properties are available to first-time homebuyers with an annual household income not exceeding 80 percent of the area median income.
