For the past several months, the City of Charleston has been closely monitoring the Zika virus, and communicating directly with federal, state and local officials to ensure that all appropriate measures are being taken to protect our citizens should the virus reach our area. As a part of that effort, Mayor John Tecklenburg asked Paul Wieters, Wellness Coordinator for the City of Charleston, to serve as the city’s Zika Coordinator, and directed him to oversee the intergovernmental communications and coordination process.
Now, with the state of Florida having confirmed cases of local transmission in the Miami area, Mr. Wieters and the City of Charleston have created a Zika Resources page on the city’s website (charleston-sc.gov/Zika-Resources). Charleston-area residents who have questions about the virus can visit the page to find answers and links to other resources. The webpage will be updated frequently, as new information becomes available.
