[ARCHIVED] CITY OF CHARLESTON CELEBRATES BREAKING GROUND ON THE FINAL PHASE OF HUGER AND KING STREET PUMP

HUGER AND KING

This morning, the City of Charleston hosted a groundbreaking to celebrate entering the final phase of the Huger Street and King Street Pump Station. Upon completion, this pump station will increase flow out of the intersection by 70,000 gallons of water per minute, significantly reducing the flooding impacts that often affect the area.

To help commemorate this momentous occasion, several leaders from the community were in attendance, including former District 3 Councilmember James Lewis Jr. During his term on Charleston City Council, Councilmember Lewis helped get this project off the ground, and today he was able to join in the celebration as we enter the final phase of the pump station.

Mayor Cogswell, Councilmember Robert Mitchell, Director of Stormwater Management Matt Fountain, and CEO of Charleston Housing Authority Art Milligan all gave remarks, focusing on the important role this project will play in flood mitigation, and how the pump station will serve as an amenity to the surrounding community.

The City of Charleston is appreciative of all our partners who worked hard over several years on this project, including Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson Engineering, SJ Hamill Construction, The Charleston Housing Authority, and the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority.

We are excited to enter the final phase of the Huger and King Street Pump Station for benefit of our residents. The construction should take around 18 months to complete.
