The City of Charleston and Charleston County Government are pleased to announce the expansion of their composting program, with the opening of six new compost drop-off sites scheduled for Friday, March 1st. These initiatives, spearheaded by the city’s Sustainability Division, aim to make composting more accessible to residents throughout Charleston.
The six new drop-off locations are strategically placed across different areas, enhancing convenience for residents. The locations include:
- Johns Island Library
- Reva Ridge Drive on Johns Island
- Randolph Park in West Ashley
- Moultrie Playground downtown
- Singleton Park on the upper peninsula
- Lonnie Hamilton Public Services Building in North Charleston
“Expanding this program makes composting easier and more accessible for residents, which is key for widespread adoption,” said Katie McKain, Director of Sustainability for City of Charleston. “This simple and free compost solution empowers individuals to effortlessly make a positive impact in our community.”
Chairman Brantley Moody of the Environmental Management Committee expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, stating, "I am excited that our staff is working with City staff to expand our composting program to other areas of the County. Our composting and recycling programs can only be successful if this community is composting and recycling correctly. Programs like this extend the life of the landfill."
In addition to the new drop-off sites, the City of Charleston will be hosting Composting Workshops to educate and assist residents in maximizing their composting experience. These workshops will provide valuable information on composting practices and techniques. Attendees will receive free kitchen compost bins. A comprehensive list of the 2024 workshops is available on the city's website and sign-up is required to attend.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the composting program by utilizing the designated drop-off sites, where food scraps can be deposited free of charge. This initiative is made possible through a partnership between the City of Charleston, Charleston County, Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Mount Pleasant, and Sullivan's Island.
