Why Corporate Volunteerism Is Important:
Corporate volunteerism offers a meaningful win-win scenario for all the shareholders involved, making it a worthwhile corporate social responsibility for businesses of all sizes. The company benefits from good social capital and more engaged employees. Corporations can connect more meaningfully with their local community, which can in turn provide good press opportunities for their public relations departments. Employees benefit from purpose-driven fulfillments and increased morale. Productivity, employee engagement, and retention are all typically improved with inclusion of corporate volunteering. Finally, the community benefits from all the great volunteer work being done.
Studies show that the more often people volunteer, the better they performed work tasks, even if it's on their own time instead of on company time. It also showed that those who volunteer tend to become better citizens at work (helping others, voicing ideas, and so on).
According to Roy Baumeister at Florida State University, people derive meaning from situations in three ways:
(1) when they see purpose and value in what they are doing
(2) when they have a sense of personal efficacy and control, and
(3) when they feel a sense of self-worth.
The best volunteer programs offer some combination of the three, and Keep Charleston Beautiful's volunteer programs do just that! Volunteers have the satisfaction of seeing public spaces transform while they work into clean, beautiful, usable spaces. They interact with Keep Charleston Beautiful staff who are present at the cleanup sites and explain how volunteers are the driving force of the organization. And lastly, volunteers often get to experience gratitude expressed directly from the members of the community, through honks from passing drivers, from neighbors coming out of their houses to say thank you, and from the waves and smiles of bikers and joggers.
By fostering employee productivity, improving employee engagement, and deepening a company’s ties to the communities that they serve, corporate volunteering can unlock substantial intangible value for companies and communities alike.
