Backyard homes are one way property owners can help to increase available housing while earning additional income.
In the City of Charleston Zoning Ordinance, we refer to backyard homes as "Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)." On September 8, 2020, City Council approved an ordinance to permit Accessory Dwelling Units, as a conditional use, in all base zoning districts in the City of Charleston. Property owners must go through an application process to approve their plans for a backyard home.
The City of Charleston Department of Housing and Community Development has also set aside funding to assist eligible homeowners to construct affordable backyard homes.
