On November 3, 2017 and March 2, 2018, the City of Charleston Department of Planning, Preservation and Sustainability held two workshops regarding elevation of historic buildings in flood prone areas.
A group of architects, contractors, and preservationists were in attendance to help guide staff in developing a policy statement on the subject. The focus was solely on design approaches to building elevation as per the Board of Architectural Reviews purview and a number of case study scenarios were reviewed for historic buildings in Charleston.
While the meeting was open to the public, it was mainly a working session among design and contracting professionals, and opportunities for public input will come in future meetings to refine the drafted policy statement.
