NEW Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons Installed along West Ashley Greenway

The City of Charleston’s Department of Traffic and Transportation is pleased to announce the installation of new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) along the West Ashley Greenway at Chadwick Drive, Nicholson Street, and Canterbury Road. These improvements are part of the city’s ongoing commitment to enhancing pedestrian and bicycle safety throughout the City.

The newly installed RRFBs are designed to provide additional visibility and improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists using the West Ashley Greenway. These innovative devices use flashing yellow lights to alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians and bicyclists in the crosswalk, making it easier for people to safely navigate the Greenway.

The RRFBs are strategically placed at the following locations:

  • Canterbury Road
  • Chadwick Drive at West Ashley Greenway (currently under construction)
  • Nicholson Street at West Ashley Greenway (currently under construction)

These West Ashley Greenway Crossings were identified as high pedestrian and bicycle traffic areas, where enhanced safety measures were needed to ensure safer crossings. The new beacons will complement existing traffic control measures and provide added protection for pedestrians and bicyclists. The West Ashley Greenway will be a vital link to the new Ashley River Crossing that is currently under construction.

The installation of these beacons follows the city's proactive approach to improving transportation infrastructure and prioritizing pedestrian and bicycle safety. These efforts are part of a broader initiative aimed at making Charleston a more walkable, bikeable, and accessible city for all residents.

“We are thrilled to enhance pedestrian safety in Charleston with the installation of these RRFBs,” said Michael Mathis, Director of Charleston’s Department of Traffic and Transportation. “With these improvements, we aim to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and the overall experience for users of the West Ashley Greenway.”

The Department of Traffic and Transportation encourages all drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists to remain alert when traveling through these areas and adhere to posted pedestrian signals and signage.
