The Preservation Division is located within the City of Charleston Department of Planning, Preservation, and Sustainability.
The division is responsible for administration of the Board of Architectural Review (BAR-L & BAR-S) within Charleston’s historic districts and Landmark Overlay properties, and investigates violations of the preservation ordinance within that purview. The division is also responsible for the administration of the Design Review Board (DRB), which oversees the design and alterations of properties outside the city’s historic districts.
In addition, the division assists and offers guidance for the community on matters of historic preservation and urban design.
See the BAR and DRB web pages for more specific information, or feel free to contact the staff at 843-724-3765, or in person at the BAR/DRB counter of the Permit Center, 2 George Street on the First Floor.
