The Charleston Police Department responded to 4 separate shooting incidents over the weekend, resulting in multiple hospitalizations and 1 death.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, April 27, 2025, officers patrolling the area of America Street and Johnson Street heard approximately 10–12 gunshots. They quickly found a victim with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives have made an arrest in this case.

- Charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, 2 counts of assault and battery first degree, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
On April 27, 2025, at approximately 8:30 p.m. officers patrolling the area heard gunfire near Johnson Street in downtown Charleston. They responded and located an adult that had been killed by gunfire.
Detectives learned that the victim was struck by gunfire during a fight involving several people. It is not known at this time if the victim was part of the initial fight, or if they were the intended target of the gunfire.
Detectives have made an arrest in this case and additional charges may be forthcoming.
- Tyris Asbury (39 of North Charleston)
- Charged with 3 counts of assault and battery in the first degree.
Asbury was taken into custody on April 28, 2025, by CPD officers and with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service. All of the incidents from this weekend appear to be unrelated and remain under investigation.
