The Charleston Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating a fatal collision on January 29, 2025, around 2:35 p.m. on the Stono River Bridge near the intersection of Maybank Highway and Headquarters Plantation Road.
Officers determined that a sedan traveling eastbound crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a pickup truck traveling westbound. The driver of the sedan was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Three occupants of the pickup truck were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The roadway reopened at 6:15 p.m.
The accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased. This is the first fatal traffic-related collisions investigated by the Charleston Police Department in 2025.
