Two Charleston Police Department officers were involved in a shooting earlier today near the intersection of King Street and Line Street.
Just before 10 a.m., CPD officers responded to a report of a physical altercation between two men in the area, one of which had a gun. Upon arrival, officers encountered the individuals. During the encounter, one of the men presented a firearm. Updated information from the initial investigation indicates two officers fired their service weapons, striking the armed suspect.
Officers on the scene immediately rendered medical aid to the suspect and he was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
No officers were injured during the incident.
As per standard protocol, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been called in to conduct an independent investigation. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased when appropriate.
Chief Walker will provide additional details in a briefing tomorrow. The time and location for this update will be shared as soon as they are confirmed.
The Charleston Police Department is fully cooperating with SLED as the investigation continues.
