Charleston Police Charge Suspect Following Early Morning Shooting

CPD Newsroom Posted on August 28, 2025

On August 21, 2025, just after 1:00 a.m., Charleston Police officers heard gunshots near the intersection of Line Street and King Street. Officers responded immediately and found an adult male in the roadway with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

A short time later, officers were advised that another adult male had arrived at a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. Detectives determined the two men knew each other and had been involved in an argument that escalated into gunfire.

Through the investigation, detectives identified Daquen Tyell Brown (22, of Charleston) as the suspect. Investigators learned that Brown presented a handgun equipped with an auto sear, commonly referred to as a “switch,” during an attempted robbery and shot the other man. The victim returned fire in self-defense, striking Brown. The victim has been released from the hospital.

Brown was released from the hospital August 28, and is charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and unlawful possession of a machine gun. Brown was under the supervision of South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon services at the time of the incident. He is in custody at the Al Cannon Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

This remains an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Charleston Police Department Tip Line at (843) 720-2422 or online at www.charleston-sc.gov/tips
