As summer activity increases across the Lowcountry, especially into the July 4th holiday weekend, the Charleston Police Department reminds residents and visitors to review and follow updated state laws regarding golf cart use on public roads.
Under South Carolina law, all golf carts operated on public streets must meet specific requirements outlined by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety and SCDMV. These regulations are in place to promote safety and reduce the risk of injury or violation.
Key Requirements Include:
- Registration & Insurance: Golf carts must be insured, permitted, and registered with the SCDMV.
- Driver Requirements: Operators must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.
- Seatbelt Law: Children under 12 must wear a seat belt when the cart is driven on public streets or highways.
- Road Restrictions: Golf carts may only be operated on secondary roads or streets where the posted speed limit is 35 mph or less.
- Travel Limit: Carts must remain within 4 miles of the address listed on the registration certificate.
- Daylight Operation Only: Golf carts may only be operated during daylight hours.
Charleston Police officers will be actively monitoring golf cart use and encourage everyone to drive safely and celebrate responsibly.
