Melton Peter Demetre Park, the only city-owned waterfront park on James Island, is home to some of the most spectacular views of Charleston and all the surrounding areas. The panoramic views include the Battery, Patriots Point, Ravenel Bridge, Mount Pleasant, Sullivan's Island, and Fort Johnson. Locals refer to it by the nickname "Sunrise Park" and it is a popular place to find fossil shark teeth from thousands of years ago. The park was officially dedicated and renamed Melton Peter Demetre Park around 2007 after its former owner donated the land to the City of Charleston.
There is also a 190-foot fishing pier, 40-foot floating dock, two sandy waterfront beaches, a covered picnic area, and small hiking trail. The park is open from 6:00am-8:00pm and has an automatic gate that opens and closes at those hours. No swimming or diving is allowed at Demetre Park and no jumping off of docks or piers.
