Fatal Overdose Investigation leads to Gun and Drug Charges of Suspected Supplier

An overdose investigation that began in February 2024 led the Charleston Police Department's Special Investigations Unit to execute a search warrant at an apartment on Ashley River Road, which resulted in an arrest on multiple gun and drug charges.

In February 2024, officers responded to a suspected overdose which left a 25-year-old man dead. After an investigation lasting several months, officers and detectives conducted a search warrant of the suspected supplier on September 12, 2024. 

Detectives seized over 400 fentanyl pills, cocaine, cocaine base, marijuana, and several prescription drugs from the residence. In addition to the drugs, seven firearms were removed from the residence. The firearms included an AK-47 as well as a handgun that had previously been reported stolen. 

As a result of the investigation, Montez Antowan Forrest (25, of Charleston) was charged with trafficking fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute (PWID) cocaine, PWID cocaine base, PWID marijuana, distribution of fentanyl, 3 counts of PWID in close proximity to a school or park, possession of a stolen handgun, 7 counts of possession of a firearm during commission of a violent crime, 7 counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Forrest was under the supervision of the SC Probation Pardon and Parole at the time of his arrest for drug related offenses.
