The City of Charleston Departments of Traffic & Transportation and Planning, Preservation, & Sustainability are working with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to restripe Meeting Street Road between Mt. Pleasant Street and the Port Access Road as part of a SCDOT resurfacing project scheduled for June 2024. The project will convert this section of Meeting Street Road and reduce the number of vehicular travel lanes from a four-lane configuration to a three-lane configuration with center two-way, left-turn lane, bike lanes in both directions, and formalized on-street parking (this conversion is commonly known as a "Road Diet").
The City presented conceptual roadway configuration alternatives and solicited feedback at a public meeting on Monday, May 6th. The meeting materials, which include the conceptual roadway alternatives can be viewed here.
The alternatives will be refined based on public feedback and studied for feasibility and to ensure traffic operations are not impacted. The results will be provided to SCDOT for review and if approved they will be incorporated in to the restriping of Meeting Street.
