The Office of Internal Affairs (OIA) is the Charleston Police Department’s accountability and review unit. OIA investigates complaints of employee misconduct, reviews compliance with departmental policy, and manages data related to use of force, vehicle pursuits, and employee-involved incidents. OIA also provides policy and procedure review, inspections and audits of department components, and referrals to the City’s Employee Assistance Program when appropriate. Through these functions, OIA supports consistent standards, fair outcomes, and clear communication with the community and employees.
OIA receives and documents complaints and compliments, assigns matters for review, and conducts internal investigations when allegations involve serious misconduct or require extended or independent examination.
