[ARCHIVED] City of Charleston Hurricane Dorian September 18 Recovery Update

Since collection began after the storm, city crews and contractors have picked up more than half a million cubic feet of debris citywide. 

Today, 36 crews are moving throughout the city picking up curbside debris in the following zones:
•    West Ashley: W0, W1, W7, W8, W9, W10
•    James Island: J2, J4, J6
•    Johns Island: JO1, JO2, JO3, JO4, JO5
•    Downtown: C1, C3
•    Daniel Island: BK

Citizens can track the progress of debris removal in specific zones throughout the city by viewing the city’s storm debris collection map, linked here:

All residents are asked to have all of their debris ready for pick up no later than Sunday, September 22nd. The first pass is expected to be completed by mid-October.

In accordance with FEMA requirements, debris monitors have been hired to maintain an official record of the volume of debris being collected citywide. 

Yesterday, city staff from various departments received training which will allow them to temporarily fill these positions, as needed, in order to expedite the collection process as much as possible.

Background Information on Debris Collection:

Debris Contract

In a typical week, the city picks up 2,400 cubic yards of trash. At that rate, it would take 10 months to remove the 100,000 cubic yards of debris left behind in the city by Dorian. In order to reduce that time dramatically, the City and County of Charleston are working with AshBritt, a debris hauling contractor, and Rostan Solutions for independent monitoring of the debris collection, which is required for FEMA reimbursement.  


Crews are collecting debris throughout the city from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. In addition to the AshBritt crews which are clearing debris in West Ashley, James Island and Johns Island, city crews are collecting debris downtown and in West Ashley, and Berkeley County crews are collecting on Daniel Island and Cainhoy.

Where is the staging area?

The city-owned property on Sumar Street is being used as a staging area, so crews that are collecting debris from neighborhoods can empty their trucks and get back to collection as quickly as possible, with special contractor crews hauling debris from the Sumar Street staging area to the burn site each day. 

Where are the burn sites?

There are four available burn site locations for disposal of debris: •    Hyde Park Road, Ravenel 
•    Pine Landing Road, Edisto Island
•    Seewee Road, Awendaw 
•    Canal Bridge Road, Johns Island
