New Business Licenses
We are pleased that you are considering our city for the location of your business.

New For-Profit Businesses
All businesses operating in the City of Charleston are required to have an annual business license for each of its locations. If you are opening a new business, buying an existing business, or transferring a business to your ownership, you must apply for a new business license under your name and submit a New Business License Application.  Additionally, commercial locations need to fill out the Business License Certificate of Occupancy Application and home-based business need to fill out the Home Occupation Application.

Non-profit organizations may be exempt from the city’s business license fee. In order to determine if your organization is exempt, you must complete and submit a Business License Certificate of Occupancy Application to the Revenue Collections – Business License Division.

Outside City Limits
Businesses located outside of the City of Charleston’s municipal limits are also subject to the city’s business license requirement if they engage in business activity within the City of Charleston unless otherwise exempt by law. To determine if your business is exempt, you must complete and submit a New Business License Application to the Revenue Collections - Business License Division.
