MLK pool will close at 4 pm on Saturday,
March 16th to begin draining the pool. 
Removal of the bubble for the winter
season will take place on Tuesday the 19th. 
It is expected that the  pool will reopen
on Monday, March 25th.

The City of Charleston Recreation Department is now a proud partner of Make a Splash! 
Make a Splash is the national child-focused water safety initiative of the USA Swimming Foundation, which aims to provide the opportunity for every child in America to learn to swim. Make a Splash partners with learn-to-swim providers and water safety advocates across the country to provide swimming lessons and educate children and their families on the importance of learning how to swim. The USA Swimming Foundation has invested millions of dollars to provide grants to qualified Local Partner learn-to-swim programs, to spread national awareness, and to bring together strategic partners to end drowning.  To date, nearly 2 million children have received the lifesaving gift of swim lessons through our Make a Splash Local Partner network, comprised of more than 600 qualified lesson providers across the nation.  Educational Programs

Lifeguard Training

This is a blended learning class where a portion will be completed online and the rest will be done at the pool. Participants must pass prerequisites: swim 300 meters, retrieve a brick from deep water, and tread water for 2 minutes without using hands. The course includes CPR-PR, First Aid, and AED certifications. Books are not included, but may be downloaded for free or purchased at redcross.org. Please register online and call for exact course location.

Starfish Swim Lesson Instructor Training

Starfish Swimming is a nationally recognized swim instructor curriculum. This innovative and learner-focused program uses an "ages and stages" format to develop instructors through in-water training and small group discussions. Participants must pass prerequisites to show water competency and basic knowledge of swimming skill. Participants must pass written exam with 80% or higher in addition to technical performance and simulation to show understanding of concepts. Please register online and call for exact course location.

 U.S. Masters Adult Learn-to-Swim Program

The USMS Adult Learn-to-Swim Program curriculum is based on teaching methods practiced by leading Adult Learn-to-Swim authorities. It incorporates the most innovative and effective training methods. The program is designed for the beginning swimmer up to the U.S. Masters swimmer. Our instructors specialize in working with adults. Set up your individual time or join scheduled classes. Contact our facilities for more information. 

Cost: $35 per City Resident; $45 per Non-City Resident per 4 hours of instruction


Youth Swim Teams

 Southern Marlins Racing 
Team (SMRT)

The year-round swimming program comprised of athletes 
from the tri-county area. Programs are 
geared for all levels, from novice to recreation to elite competitors on travel 
teams. Practice schedules vary 
by locations, age groups, and swim seasons.

City of Charleston Intramural 
Swim League
 
This is a fun, developmental, 
non-competitive league. 
Swimmers practice and 
compete between the three City pools (MLK, HH, WLS). Swimmers need to be able to swim the length of the 
pool (25 meters) non-stop 
to make the team. For

Cost: $40 per City Resident; $55 per Non-City Resident ($30 per additional child)

This a parent supported 
team and family volunteers 
are always welcome! 
Team suits may be 
purchased but are not required. Tentative practice start date is 
May 1. Practice times 
will vary according to age group. Meets are Tuesday and Thursday
evenings and swimmers usually need to report to the pool by 5:45pm. 

Cost: $60 per City Resident; $75 per Non-City Resident ($50 per additional child)
Cost includes t-shirt and cap.

Adult Swim Team

Adults over 18

The team provides a comprehensive program to help fitness, tri-athlete, competitive, and 
non-competitive adults achieve their swimming goals. Skill levels range from beginner swimmers 
to USA Masters world record holders. 

Workouts occur Monday-Friday from 5:45am-7:00am and Saturday from
7:00am-8:00am downtown at the 50 meter Olympic size MLK Pool.
