Internship and Volunteer Opportunities

The City of Charleston Records Center is always eager for volunteers and interns to assist with the myriad projects awaiting completion. This past fall, the Records Management Division welcomed the assistance of students Anna Simpkins and Amanda Brown of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation, a collaborative effort between Clemson University and the College of Charleston. Anna and Amanda gained personal knowledge of records storage and organizational processes while completing an internship for Dr. Katherine Pemberton's Research Methods Class.

Anna Simpkin's project involved the organization of files relating to the Electrical Division of the City of Charleston's Public Service Department. These records consist of the files of City Electricians F. M. Searson (1964-1965) and Byron Beck (1965-1983), along with those of Interim City Electrician, Charles Rector (1965). Anna's assistance allowed for the inclusion of these records with the City of Charleston Public Service Files, 1964-1983. Thank you, Anna!

Amanda Brown's project involved organization of the Arthur B. Schirmer Mayoral Papers, 1975. Mayor Schirmer assumed office in August 1975, completing the term of Mayor J. Palmer Gaillard, who accepted a post as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Reserve Affairs from President Gerald Ford. Although Mayor Schirmer only held office for a few short months, his papers shed light on an important time in the City's history. Thanks Amanda!
