Check with your Home Owners Association for any needed approvals.
Get a copy of your plat (showing property lines, the house, and any easements) from your closing paperwork and draw in where you would like to place the fence.
Your fence will need Zoning approval – bring the marked up plat to Zoning in the Permit Center at 2 George St. to discuss and get approval.
If your fence will encroach on a drainage easement, you will need to complete an encroachment application found on the City’s website. For questions about the application, call Marcella Hedegor at 724-3754.
The encroachment permit process takes 2-4 weeks. You will need to include a copy of the Zoning-approved plat; the completed, typed application; and the $25 fee. Contact Engineering at 724-3782 to schedule a time to meet with an inspector to discuss your fence and assist with staking the placement of the fence on your lot.
All fences require a building permit. If you will need an encroachment permit it must be approved prior to obtaining the fence building permit. Building permits are issued in the Permit Center at 2 George St.
