City of Charleston Wando River Bridge Closure PM Update for May 15

The city of Charleston continued working today with state and regional officials to understand and mitigate the effects of the Wando River Bridge closure.

Mayor Tecklenburg has been in direct communication with South Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary Christy Hall, and city officials continue coordinating with their partners in Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, Charleston County, Berkeley County, and the Charleston County School District.

The Charleston Police Department has brought in additional personnel who are working to assist affected motorists in the Cainhoy area and throughout the city.

The city of Charleston department of Traffic and Transportation is actively monitoring traffic flow and signal timing impacts and addressing issues as they arise. In addition, electronic message boards have been positioned downtown on Morrison Drive and Coming Street to provide directional assistance to motorists moving toward the affected areas.

Mayor Tecklenburg said, “We remain committed to working with our state and regional partners to do everything we can to mitigate the impacts of this bridge closure. We expect to know much more tomorrow and will continue working to keep our citizens updated as new information becomes available.”
