[ARCHIVED] City of Charleston Closely Monitoring Hurricane Irma

The city of Charleston has been and will continue closely monitoring Hurricane Irma’s track and the potential impact for South Carolina. Emergency officials, supervisors, managers, and department heads from the city are meeting daily to make initial preparations and have been in communication with Charleston County and other local agencies, and will continue to receive regular updates from the National Weather Service regarding the potential for severe weather. Tomorrow, Charleston City Council will begin holding daily telephonic meetings at 5:30 p.m.

“While it is still too soon to know exactly what the impact of the storm may be for our area, residents are encouraged to begin making preparations, including gathering emergency supplies, becoming familiar with evacuation routes and coordinating with family members,” said Charleston Emergency Management director Mark Wilbert.

Residents are encouraged to review the city’s Hurricane Information webpage and the available resources in preparation, which can be accessed at http://www.charleston-sc.gov/hurricane-information. Updates on Hurricane Irma will be released and posted to the webpage as new information becomes available.

For the most accurate and up-to-date weather forecasts, residents should stay tuned to the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service Charleston websites, as well as local media and the FEMA app.

A citizen information line is being established at 843-973-7219 and will go live with a message reflecting the most current information later today. Additional hurricane preparedness information can be found at www.scemd.org and in the downloadable Hurricane Preparedness Guide.
