Charleston Police Department Investigates West Ashley Shooting that Leaves One Dead
Charleston, S.C. - The Charleston Police Department is investigating a shooting on April 8, 2023, that left one dead.
Around 8:20 am on April 8, 2023, a CPD patrol officer was completing paperwork behind the Publix grocery store at 1401 Sam Rittenberg when he heard gunshots. He immediately began to search for the source of the gunshots. Around the same time, Consolidated Dispatch received a 911 call from a concerned citizen reporting gunshots in the same general area. An area search by patrol officers located an injured male lying on the pavement near the Publix grocery store. CPD patrol officers rendered aid to the victim until EMS arrived, who pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. The male appeared to have suffered an apparent gunshot wound.
CPD Central Detectives and Crime Scene Technicians responded to the scene and immediately began investigating the incident. At this time, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased. This appears to investigators to be an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the on-duty CPD Central Detective at CPD NCIC Operations at (843)720-2422. Anyone with information who wishes to remain anonymous is asked to contact Lowcountry Crime Stoppers at (843)554-1111.
