About the Division
The Traffic Operations Division oversees permitting for the department and installation and maintenance of traffic signs and markings throughout the City. This division also oversees the Traffic Safety Office. This division works closely with the City's Department of Public Service-Engineering Division, the Department of Parks, and the Police Department.
In addition to working with other departments within the City, Traffic Operations works closely with Charleston County, the South Carolina Department of Transportation, and the College of Charleston's Public Safety Department to ensure safe and efficient traffic movements throughout the City.
Programs & Committees
Traffic operations coordinates the Traffic Calming Program and represents the Department on the Special Events Committee. A Code Enforcement Officer within this division conducts on-site inspections to monitor traffic conditions including street closures and the placement of storage devices and dumpsters in the public right-of-way. This division also participates in the adjudication of parking citations.
Signs & Markings Plan
The Signs and Markings Division maintains traffic signs and traffic pavement markings on City streets within the City of Charleston's jurisdiction. The Signs and Markings crews follow a maintenance schedule to ensure all areas of the City are maintained on a regular basis.
Monthly Work Area Schedule
- Daniel Island and Cainhoy: July and November
- Downtown Peninsula: January, March, June, and September
- Johns and James Island: April, August, and December
- West Ashley: February, May, and October
In the event of an emergency, public safety, or a designated special project, other work may take prioritization over regular maintenance.
