The City is creating a new zoning district in the Zoning Code called the Student Housing (STH) Overlay Zone and adopting the new district boundaries into the official Zoning Map. The Student Housing Overlay Zone is intended to provide for appropriate sites for the establishment or expansion of student housing uses within commercial or mixed-use zoning districts. The proposed change will not affect most properties in the new overlay zone but will place new rules on properties developed primarily as student housing in the future.
A public hearing regarding the proposed zoning change will take place at a meeting of the City’s Planning Commission on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, 5:00 PM, 2 George St, Charleston, SC 29401.
A second public hearing will take place at City Council on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at 5:00 PM, and further discussion of the zoning change will take place at a meeting of City Council on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at 5:00 PM, both at Charleston City Hall, 80 Broad Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
