For Office of Councilmember for District #1


The City of Charleston Municipal Election Commission hereby gives notice that the City of Charleston will conduct a Special Election on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 to fill (1) one seat for the office of City Council District 1. This is a non-partisan, at large, municipal election conducted pursuant to SC Code of Laws 5-15-62. There shall be no party affiliation placed on the ballot. Term of office will expire December 31, 2023 or until such time as the newly elected council member takes office.

The last day that persons may register to be eligible to vote in this election (In Person) is December 10, 2021. (Online registration deadline is December 12, 2021). If submitting a voter registration by mail or fax, it must be Post Marked no later than December 13, 2021.

Candidate filing opens noon Friday, October 29, 2021 and closes 12:00 noon Monday, November 8, 2021.

Residents desiring to file as a candidate for the office of City Council District 1, must file a Statement of Candidacy with the City of Charleston Legal Department, 50 Broad Street, 2nd Floor, Charleston, SC 29401.

Registered voters who cannot vote in person may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot. Absentee ballots may be obtained from the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration or Berkeley County Voter Registration and Elections. In Charleston County, you may call 843-744-8683 or send an email to absentee@charlestoncounty.org to inquire about the availability of absentee ballots. In Berkeley County, you may call 843-719-4058 or send an email to webvre@berkeleycountysc.gov to inquire about the availability of absentee ballots.

At 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 10, 2022 the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration will begin the examination of the absentee ballot return envelopes at the Elections Office, 4367 Headquarters Road, North Charleston, SC.

On Thursday, January 13, 2022, at 12:00 noon, the Municipal Election Commission will hold a public hearing at the Board of Elections office, 4367 Headquarters Road, North Charleston, SC, to determine the validity of all ballots challenged in this election and certify election results.

This Municipal Election will be held under the new rules for providing Photo ID at the polling place. The polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the polling place fixed by law in this county.
