Short Term Rental Categories
Residential Category 1 corresponds to the area of the peninsula in the Old and Historic District (area in light purple. In addition to meeting the general requirements for a residential short term rental permit, units in Category 1 must meeting the following requirements:
Property shall not contain more than 1 Short Term Rental unit
Property shall provide 1 off street parking space in addition to providing, on the subject property, required off street parking for existing uses on the property. The parking space may be situated in tandem with the required spaces for other uses on the property.
The Short Term Renal unit shall be located within an existing structure or accessory building that is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For information on listing a property on the National Register, click here.
Residential Category 2 corresponds to the area of the peninsula outside of the short term rental overlay zone and the Old and Historic District. In addition to meeting the general requirements for a residential short term rental permit, units in Category 2 must meeting the following requirements:
Property shall not contain more than 1 Short Term Rental unit
Property shall provide 1 off street parking space in addition to providing, on the subject property, required off street parking for existing uses on the property. The parking space may be situated in tandem with the required spaces for other uses on the property.
The Short Term Rental unit shall be located in a building constructed 50 or more years ago.
Residential Category 3 corresponds to the all areas of the city off of the peninsula(Daniel Island, James Island, Johns Island, and West Ashley). In addition to meeting the general requirements for a residential short term rental permit, units in Category 3must meeting the following requirements:
Property shall provide 1 off street parking space in addition to providing, on the subject property, required off street parking for existing uses on the property. The parking space may be situated in tandem with the required spaces for other uses on the property.
