The Training Division is responsible for initial firefighter training and incumbent continuing education, as well as all emergency medical training for the 354 members of the Charleston Fire Department (CFD). The division covers all career topics and disciplines within the Operations Division from entry level recruit to command level officer.
The Training Division accomplishes this by delivering courses in four separate areas: recruits, incumbents, driver’s program and medical program. Each program is directed by a program coordinator who reports directly to the Battalion Chief of Training. The Training Division is led by an Assistant Chief who reports to the Deputy Chief of Operations.
The department uses a five-story tower for its firefighting drills and exercises to accurately portray all types of scenarios firefighters may encounter. The Fire Department is working to secure a multi-acre training site to develop a state-of-the-art training facility.

In early 2015, CFD Firefighters were given the unique opportunity to train at the vacant Sergeant Jasper 14-story hi-rise structure. This structure slated for demolition in 2015 has given CFD personnel an opportunity to hone their skills on search and rescue, forcible entry, and hi-rise operations.
