Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)

Program Overview

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBGis a federal program created under the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 and is administered by the Department of Houisng and Urban Development (HUD). This program provides grant funds to local and state government to be used to develop viable urban communities by:

          • Providing decent housing
          • Creating suitable living environment 
          • Expanding economic opportunities

CDBG funds have been awarded to the Department from HUD for nearly 40 years. Through the administration of these funds we are able to provide various services to eligible City of Charleston residents directly through in house programs and by providing grants and loans to organizations to assist in acheiving the goals of our department. Some of the eligible activities for the use of CDBG funds are noted below:    

          • Housing construction and rehabilitation
          • Fair Housing activities
          • Economic Development assistance
          • Health initiatives
          • Youth programs
