2017 Remembrance Ceremony:
The Charleston Fire Department will commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the loss of 9 Charleston Firefighters at 7:00 PM on Sunday, June 18th, 2017.  The ceremony will be conducted at the Charleston 9 Memorial Park, 1807 Savannah Highway.  Members of the fire service and our community are welcome to attend. 

Standing Watch:
  • Charleston Fire Department personnel will initiate a watch at the flagpole of the memorial park starting at midnight and continuing for the 24 hours of June 18th.  
  • Uniformed personnel interested in participating in the watch should contact Battalion Chief Travis Holsberg via email at .
  • Those participating in watch should note the following instructions:
    1. Relieving guards assemble at the front gate at attention.
    2. When the relieving guards assemble at the front gate, the standing guards will also come to attention at the flag pole.
    3. Relieving guards march in unison to the flag pole where the standing guards are stationed.
    4. The relieving guards and the standing guards will salute with a four count up and a four count down.
    5. Once all guards have ordered arms, the standing guards will march to the front gate in unison while the relieving guards position themselves at the flag pole.  The relieving guards now become the standing guards until they are relieved. 
    6. When standing guard, remember to be at parade rest with hands in front of your body, left over right hand.

Schedule:
  • Family members may arrive any time prior to 7:00 PM.  Families of the fallen and members of the CFD, past and present, will be seated in the tented area and will receive priority seating.
  • Uniformed personnel from outside agencies should arrive by 6:30 PM and check in with the CFD member located at the Alpha/Delta corner of the memorial park.
  • The ceremony will begin promptly at 7:00 PM.  
  • Members of the Peer Support Team and counselors from Charleston Dorchester Mental Health Center will be on site to offer support. 
  • Media interviews will only be conducted at the park from 5:30 PM - 6:00 PM. 

Ceremony:
  • Formation of the “Sea of Blue” starting at 6:30 PM.  CFD Honor Guard will organize uniformed personnel into a “Sea of Blue”, creating a pathway of uniformed personnel between the entry and seating area.
  • Between 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM Honor Guard members will escort family members through the pathway of uniformed members.
  • At 7:00 PM, uniformed members will proceed to an assembly area under the direction of the Honor Guard.
  • The National Anthem - Allyson Burrell.
  • Invocation - Chaplain Doug Farmer.
  • Opening remarks - Assistant Chief Joseph Roberts.
  • Remarks - Mayor John Tecklenburg.
  • Remembrance tribute of the fallen - Reverend Jimmy Gallant.
  • Musical selection "Wind Beneath My Wings" - NCFD Engineer William Kennedy. 
  • Roll call of the fallen - Assistant Chiefs Joey Roberts & Chris Vanhoy.
  • Musical selection "You Raise Me Up" - NCFD Engineer William Kennedy.
  • Benediction - Chaplin Rich Robinson.
  • Drums and Pipes - "Amazing Grace" followed by Lone Piper. 
  • Dismissal - CFD Honor Guard.
  • Time of reflection throughout the site.


Parking:
  • Parking in the area is very limited and we encourage carpooling.
  • The memorial park parking lot along Savannah Highway will not be available.
  • Please see the map below for the two recommended parking areas.
